Lyle, I believe the article you linked to in this article is the incorrect one as it does not discuss Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE). A simple search of your site revealed that https://www.bodyrecomposition.com/training/what-is-training-intensity.html does, in fact, discuss this idea. Thought you might want to know.

I'm a big believer in functional type training - especially as I get older. It helps me perform better in my chosen activities, etc. I also believe in including balance exercises to help build those secondary and stabilizer muscles to help keep me from getting injured.

When one talks about general health and wellness, that includes the mental/emotional aspects as well. I feel that a workout needs to add a feeling of wellness, not just exhuastion, to your life. If it energizes you for hours and days afterwards, then it's a workout that I would say is healthy. That energy abundance exceeding actual needs is freedom. Freedom to think in new ways, operate in new ways, be open to explore new pathways.

I think this can also be acheived at the same time as physical wellness. They are intertwined, but how so varies.

I certainly like the idea of rotating a period of steady state exercises with shorter interval based training. Personally I perfer bodyweight exercises over weights, but do intend to gradually add deadlift, front squat into the mix over the next few months.

Why is three times per week cardiovascular exercise the minimum for cardiovascular health? Can someone not be extremely *healthy* without that?

How is the ACSM addressing "basic cardiovascular HEALTH" when they are measuring levels of cardiovascular FITNESS, not health?

Measures of cardiovascular health include the level of calcification in the arteries, C-reactive protein levels, oxidized LDL, etc.

Very interesting read, I know this will be very useful in helping my wife out with her general fitness goals.

Back in 2006 I started lifting because my bloodwork came back really crapy. I started lifting and working out but it made no difference. I got pissed and decided to workout just to get stronger and look better naked as I did this my blood profile improved. I think the stress was wasn't helping my overall health but as soon as I laid back and switched goals...well everything changed.

Stress is a funny thing

I have a pretty good blood profile right now, my hdl levels are on the low side but the ratio is good. I'm wondering if I lower my bodyfat this will improve, I'm hovering at 14% right now.
