Reading this was one of those "aha moments" where the light goes on. Like carb depleting before loading, where the body will retain water if you decrease your water intake, etc. I have read where Alwyn Cosgrove has said something to the effect that whatever you try to do to your body that it does the opposite. If you want to reduce your bodyfat, burn glycogen. If you want to prevent water retention, drink water. And I guess we can add that if you want to increase your protein synthesis, then reduce your protein ingestion frequency. Maybe someday we will learn to outsmart the magnificent organism that is the human body.

Given the lack of research and the effectiveness of things like IF, here's my interpretation of what one should get out of it: Just eat enough protein and calories when it works for you because stressing about the timing will probably result in more catabolism than anything due to the cortisol spewing into your system! :-)

I noticed that the citations used in the article are not listed on this page. I was wondering if you could provide the sources? I would be very interested in reading into some of the topics a little further. Thank you!

Reading through this reminded me of Vince Girondas meal frequency preferences and how on the money he was.. modern bodybuilders would benefit to look at real data like this.

A truly great article, Lyle

Lyle,

Is there a "need" for use or periodic low protein days in order to prevent diminishing results from a given level of protein intake? e.g. if regularly consuming a set amount of protein on a daily basis, over time does there come a point where you'd actually need to consume more protein just to maintain a given level of muscle mass

Good article as always Lyle.

Still wonder how you could sheet so much pizza dough with a clear conscience!

Anyway, thanks for the thought-provoking and well-substantiated article.

I also look forward to the book by you, Aragon, Berkhan and Fagerli.
